Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician 2 years exp required

Shift Information:

Primarily Day shift with weekend rotation; 5 - 8 hr shifts per week

Position Summary

• The role involves conducting laboratory analyses on blood and other body fluids to assist in diagnosing and treating diseases.
• The MT/MLS will be expected to work across various departments within the laboratory and perform duties accurately and efficiently under general supervision.

Minimum Requirements

• Education : A Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience : No previous experience is required, making this a potential entry-level position for someone with the appropriate educational background.
• Certifications : The position requires certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through recognized bodies such as ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), AMT (American Medical Technologists), or NCCLS (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards).

Skills and Abilities

• Effective communication and cooperation with other departments, medical staff, and patients.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in performing laboratory duties.
• Ability to manage time and tasks effectively to prevent errors or confusion.
• Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills related to laboratory equipment and procedures.
• Awareness of and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures.

Supervision

• The role receives supervision from the Medical Director, Manager, Supervisors, and Section Heads but does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Specimen Processing : The MT/MLS is responsible for identifying and logging specimens, ensuring proper testing is done, and analyzing results (either manually or with automated methods).
• Quality Control : Ensuring that quality control criteria are met before releasing results. The MT/MLS must promptly repeat any procedures that do not meet quality standards.
• Troubleshooting : Identifying problems with procedures or equipment and resolving them following established protocols.
• Training : Assisting in the training of new staff and helping them develop their technical skills.
• Maintenance and Supplies : Responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring supplies are well-stocked, and managing reagents, including ensuring they are tested, rotated, and within expiration dates.
• Collaboration : Working closely with others in the lab and hospital to ensure smooth operations and timely patient care.

Non-Essential Functions

• Performing miscellaneous duties as needed, and providing help to co-workers during busy times or when patient care priorities shift.

Summary of Skills and Responsibilities

In this role, a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist is expected to:

1. Perform lab analyses accurately and in accordance with established procedures.
2. Maintain proficiency in all clinical areas of the laboratory.
3. Ensure quality control and troubleshoot when issues arise.
4. Assist in training and mentoring new technical staff.
5. Collaborate effectively with hospital and laboratory teams to provide the best patient care.
