The Certified Surgical Technologist / First Assist provides advanced assistance to surgeons during operative and other invasive procedures. The CST/First Assist works under the direct supervision of the surgeon to ensure safe and efficient surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, managing instruments and supplies, and directly assisting with surgical tasks such as exposure, hemostasis, suturing, and more. This role requires specialized knowledge of surgical techniques, anatomy, and sterile technique.
*Key Responsibilities:* * Prepares the operating room for surgery by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. * Assists the surgeon as the first assistant during surgery, including: * Retracting tissues for exposure * Controlling bleeding through hemostasis * Suturing incisions * Applying dressings * Maintains strict adherence to aseptic and sterile technique. * Assists with patient positioning, prepping, and draping. * Participates in surgical counts (sponges, needles, instruments) to ensure safety. * Anticipates the needs of the surgical team during procedures. * Assists with post-operative dressings and patient transfer to recovery. * Documents appropriately and accurately in the patient’s surgical record. * Communicates effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other members of the healthcare * team. * Ensures proper care, cleaning, and sterilization of instruments and equipment. * Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
*Qualifications:* * Diploma from an accredited surgical technology program * Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by NBSTSA. * Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) or Certified First Assistant (CFA) credential required. * 1–2 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient operating room setting * BLS certification * Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs * Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques.
