Labor & Delivery Unit Overview

Charting System: EPIC
Department: Labor & Delivery
Trauma Level: I/II (recent experience required)
Radius Rule: Must live within 100 miles

Unit Details

  • L&D Beds: 9
  • OR Suites for C-Sections: 2
  • Triage Beds: 7
  • Average Births: 9/day (~250/month, ~3000/year)
  • Staff Ratios: Aim for 1:1 or 1:2 (2 patients common)
  • Charge Nurse: Yes, free charge each shift
  • Support Staff: OB Techs present
  • In-House Coverage: OB & Neonatologist 24/7

Certifications Required

  • BLS
  • NRP
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced

Preferred: Spanish-speaking and experience with “Spinning Babies” techniques.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Must perform vaginal exams (not just observe)
  • C-section circulation
  • Newborn transitions
  • Assist anesthesiology
  • IV starts, blood draws
  • APGAR scoring
  • Postpartum hemorrhage control (SIM lab training available)
  • Epidural and amnio infusion management
  • Drip titration: Magnesium, Pitocin, Insulin, Blood
  • Must be proficient with EFM (CPN Centricity system)
  • Recent hospital experience (within the past 3 years) only considered

Patient Population

  • 28 weeks gestation and above
  • High prevalence of HTN, 7–10% without prenatal care
  • High Spanish-speaking population
  • Tele monitoring (RNs not required to read tele; monitored by cardiac techs on adult side)

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift Times: 6:45–7:15 (AM/PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Nights: Fri/Sat
    • Days: Sat/Sun
  • Holiday Requirement: 2 of 3 holidays (eve/day of) per contract
  • On-Call: Low census on-call only (voluntary additional call available)
  • No 48-hour guarantees; no blocked scheduling; max 5 RTO days

Floating Expectations

  • May float to: NICU, Peds, Women’s, MedSurg, ICU (appropriate patients only), RDU
  • L&D nurses may care for antepartum or immediate postpartum patients (up to 2 hours post-delivery)

  • 1 day Clinical Education/EPIC
  • 1 day Floor Orientation
