Position Summary:

Cencora seeks an attorney with significant experience in data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, and emerging artificial intelligence issues to provide strategic legal advice on data risk management and innovation priorities. This role reports to the Assistant General Counsel - Data Governance, Privacy, and Cybersecurity and collaborates with legal, business, and functional teams across the enterprise.

While part of a global team, this role requires expertise in US, Canada, and LA-relevant privacy, cybersecurity, and AI laws, regulations, and guidance. Significant analysis and legal advice regarding HIPAA and state healthcare privacy laws are routine for this role.

This position requires a lawyer with strong analytical skills, business-oriented legal services delivery in a fast-paced tech environment, and project management skills. The successful candidate will provide strategic insights to compliance partners and develop governance mechanisms for emerging data and technology law areas.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Advise on complex legal, regulatory, and policy issues in data privacy, protection (federal and state laws, HIPAA, Canadian laws), cybersecurity (CMMC, NIST, ISO 27001, HITRUST), and AI (NIST RMF, state and local AI laws).
  2. Draft, review, and negotiate contracts related to healthcare, HIPAA, privacy, cybersecurity, AI, and data protection; create templates and playbooks for efficient contract management.
  3. Assess and mitigate harms from privacy and cybersecurity incidents through communication, issue escalation, and stakeholder partnership.
  4. Review technology proposals involving privacy, cyber, and AI risks; provide pragmatic, privacy-by-design solutions.
  5. Demonstrate decision-making and communication skills during incidents or high-risk proposals requiring escalation.
  6. Manage multiple projects effectively, prioritizing high-value and high-risk needs efficiently.

Experience and Education Requirements

Minimum 5-7 years legal experience, focusing on privacy, data governance, and cybersecurity. In-house experience and healthcare legal work are preferred. Must be a graduate of an accredited law school and admitted to a US state bar. This role is akin to a senior law firm associate, capable of sophisticated counseling with limited supervision.

Minimum Skills, Knowledge, and Ability Requirements:

  • Knowledge of privacy, cybersecurity, AI laws, including cyber disclosures to regulators like the SEC; healthcare laws like HIPAA is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate across jurisdictions for multi-country tech launches and investments.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and liaising with specialists.
  • Ability to understand business models, technology trends, and future regulatory developments.
  • Experience advising senior management with clear risk communication.
  • Strong soft skills for incident management and risk escalation.
  • Experience working with compliance teams and defining operational targets.
  • Privacy, AI, or information security certifications (CIPP, CIPM, AIGP, CIPT, CISSP) preferred.
  • Excellent negotiation, prioritization, multitasking, and client management skills.
