The Backus Hospital Emergency Department is a 42 bed unit which is responsible for treating a wide variety of patients in a fast-paced, ever evolving environment. As a Level III Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center, the unit includes some of the latest technologies, including EPIC EMR, Teleneurology, wireless medication scanning, among others. We also have a separate behavioral health area to ensure the safety of our patients and staff. Our unit has a uniquely collaborative and supportive culture, where we promote professional growth for our team of high-achieving, energetic, and adaptable medical professionals.
The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is recognized as the clinical expert and a clinical practice role model for Registered Nurses. The CNL will assess and provide clinical support to nurses across Backus hospital from 7pm-7am 7 days per week with a primary focus on new staff and clinically challenging patients. They will act as a mentor to the bedside nurse and a liaison to the managers, supervisors and clinical educators to fulfill and carry out the educational plans as well as provide feedback for development. The incumbent will make independent decisions regarding complex patient care problems which involve the analysis of multiple sources of data, identification of alternative health care possibilities and the selection of a course of treatment action. This CNL will be responsible for attending and leading rapid responses and codes on the off shift.
Education: Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
Experience: Minimum 1 (one) year RN critical care and/or emergency department work experience within past 4 (four) years. At least 3 (three) years unit specific experience and charge nurse role preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Current State of CT licensure as a Registered Nurse; current healthcare BLS Certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required. Specialty certification as appropriate to the assigned work strongly preferred.

• Must have demonstrated excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to set priorities and teach, coach, mentor less experienced staff to develop confidence, increase knowledge, and self – sufficiency.
• Must possess a resilient spirit and unrelenting passion for taking action and making things happen.
• Maintains open communication, able to manage conflict resolution and build on team work. Ability to manage and make decisions about staffing needs with consideration to patient volume and acuity. Addresses and resolves complaints to ensure customer satisfaction.
