Position Summary

The Registered Nurse in the Radiation Oncology department is accountable for ensuring the provision of high quality evidence-based nursing care in the radiation oncology setting, assessing the physical, educational, psychosocial and spiritual needs of patients referred for radiation as part of their cancer treatment . The Radiation Oncology Nurse provides clinical care and education, and assists in coordinating the patient's care among multiple providers. The Radiation Oncology Nurse utilizes a collaborative process to assess, plan, facilitate, implement and monitor patients throughout their radiation oncology treatment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Under general supervision:

  • Monitor and assess patients throughout treatment for potential symptoms/side effects of radiation therapy.

  • Provide education to the patient according to the treatment plan and symptoms as patient condition changes.

  • Review patient education materials and nursing documentation forms, update and revise as needed

  • Collection of data about the health history and status of the patient.

  • Assist providers in all aspects of consultation, treatment, procedures and follow up care.

  • Carry out nursing interventions including but not limited to, wound and skin care

  • Document care provided accurately in the patient record.

  • Participate in the development of the plan of care with other team members and safely implement that care.

  • Collaborate with other disciplines within the Middlesex Health organization to provide coordination and continuity of care for radiation patients.

  • Active member of weekly chart rounds.

  • Works closely with the patient and family; makes appropriate referrals to meet the individual, cultural and spiritual needs, monitors and evaluates services provided.

  • Works as a liaison to and in collaboration with patients, affiliated physicians, disease management liaisons, and the Middlesex Health System.

  • Assess social, emotional and educational needs and make referrals to appropriate resources.

  • Participates in Cancer Center and MHS quality improvement activities through problem identification, work group participation and program development.

  • Identifies opportunities to enhance pathway outcomes and processes.

  • Upholds both the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act and American Nurses Association Scope and Standards of professional practice.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

  • Currently licensed to practice in the State of Connecticut

  • Independent, self-directed and highly motivated

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oncology Certified Nurse

  • Radiation Oncology experience
