Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs duties in the scrub role as assigned:
    • 1)Prepares sterile field in a timely manner.
    • 2)Complies with departmental policy and procedures regarding specimens, counts, medication to field, and disposition of contaminated instruments.
    • 3)Maintains sterile field and boundaries prior to and during procedures.
    • 4)Acts as preceptor, sharing knowledge in a supportive/educational manner.
    • 5)Assists in emergency situations as assigned.
    • 6)Maintains a safe work environment according to regulatory agency standards.
    • 7)Maintains educational records and timecard.
    • 8)Maintains competencies.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the surgical field and supplies / instruments delivered to the field:
    • 1)Verifies instruments/supply/equipment available and ready per physician preference card.
    • 2)Verifies specific needs of physician by reading scrub tips.
    • 3)Assists in opening sterile supplies and instruments.
    • 4)Assists with clean up and turnover upon completion of case.
    • 5)Efficiently utilizes supplies to avoid waste and decrease cost.
  • May function in role of Sterile Processing Technician as needed to cover vacation and other days off.


Education/Experience Required:

  • • High School diploma or GED. • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Tech program. • Previous OR experience strongly preferred. • New graduates must present copy of final transcripts and letters of recommendation from two clinical instructors.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • • Good communication skills with ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others. • Ability to independently perform scrub duties. • Good organizational skills • Knowledgeable of standard OR procedures and equipment. • Knowledgeable of standard OR medical terminology. • Knowledgeable of standard OR safety practices and sterile techniques. • Ability to cooperate and work well with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening disease and radiation. • Position needs to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated. • Ability to perform heavy lifting (lifting 50 pounds occasionally and/or 25-50 pounds frequently and/or lifting 10-20 pounds constantly.) • Ability to work in fast paced environment with established time constraints.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
