Job Description for Elementary School Librarian

The Anchorage School District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Elementary School Librarian. This is an open recruitment to build a pool of applicants for future vacancies. The position involves fostering a love of learning, promoting literacy, and integrating technology and information literacy into the curriculum.

Position Details

  • Type: Full-time, 1.0 FTE
  • Work Year: 182 days with 12 contract payments
  • Salary: B00/00 - B72/20 ($56,823-$100,155) DOE
  • Location: Open to various school sites

Qualifications

  • A valid Alaska educator certificate with endorsement in library science, media services, or school librarian.
  • Current teaching certificate with enrollment in a library endorsement program may qualify through ASD’s Grow Your Own Librarian program.
  • Evidence of content knowledge: degree, minor, Praxis scores, or endorsement in the content area.
  • Preferred: Alaska Type C special services certificate with endorsement in library science or related fields; Master's degree.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Support a culture of literacy and literacy instruction.
  2. Engage students in appreciation of literature and lifelong reading.
  3. Use standards from the American Association of School Librarians and ISTE.
  4. Collaborate with staff to design grade-level learning experiences integrating critical thinking, information literacy, and technology.
  5. Manage and maintain the library collection, including evaluation, weeding, and organization.
  6. Create flexible, accessible spaces for inquiry, creativity, and collaboration.
  7. Lead professional learning and serve as a technology project lead.
  8. Advocate for equitable access to resources and maintain an online presence.
  9. Participate in school decision-making and ongoing professional development.

Physical and Work Environment

The role requires frequent movement, handling of materials, and the ability to work under pressure in a diverse environment. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as required by law.

The work environment includes indoor and outdoor settings with moderate noise levels. Exposure to technology and outdoor weather conditions is possible.
