Unit Overview: NICU/Nursery

• Level of Care: Level 2 Nursery (Intermediate Care Nursery - ICN)
• Beds: 30
• Nurse:Patient Ratio: 5–6:1
• Charting System: EPIC

Certifications Required

• BLS
• NRP

Common Diagnoses / Patient Population

• Normal newborns
• Respiratory distress

Required Skills

• ICN level care
• CPAP management
• Monitoring (vitals, telemetry)
• IV insertion & blood draws
• Blood glucose testing
• Hearing screens
• Delivery attendance

Medications & Drips

• Titration Required? No
• Common Drips: IVF, antibiotics (set-rate)

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse: On every shift, takes an assignment
• House Supervisor: Evenings, weekends, holidays
• Support Staff: 1 scrub tech per shift (primarily assists with deliveries)
• Neonatologist Availability: Pediatric hospitalist on-site 24/7 (call room on unit)
• Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP, high flow, limited use of vents for transfers (RT manages equipment)
• Telemetry: Yes (monitors in ICN, no monitor techs; RNs interpret strips)

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift Times: 5:00 PM – 5:30 AM (nights)
• Scheduling Type: Block scheduling, self-scheduling allowed
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
• On-Call/Standby: None
• Floating: May float to postpartum/couplet care if census is low

Dress Code

• Scrubs provided
• Shoes must not be worn outside
