Key Responsibilities
Maintain at least 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) per year
Check supplies, instrumentation, and equipment needed for surgical procedures
Provide a sterile field for surgical procedures
Assist the surgeon with draping the patient to isolate the operative site
Maintain the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques
Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon
Count sponges and sharps with the RN prior to surgery
Prepare the sterile dressing for the patient’s incision
Stock rooms and may handle meds, sharps, and syringes on the OR field
Required Qualifications
Completed a military surgical technology program
Certified Surgical Technologist certification through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTS)
Degree in Surgical Technology
Evidence of employment as a surgical technologist for a cumulative period of one year between 12/31/10 – 12/31/14
Certified Surgical Technologist certification required within 24 months after employment
Preferred Qualifications
Surgical Technologist Certification not required for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) with current licensure in the State of New York
