Key Responsibilities - Execute provider orders, administer medications, and assist in examinations/treatments.
- Assess new or ill inmates/residents; coordinate referrals or emergency care as necessary.
- Perform emergency procedures and promptly notify providers for follow-up orders.
- Supervise, guide, and monitor LPNs, LVNs, and unlicensed medical staff.
- Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and facilitate early releases when appropriate.
- Maintain effective working relationships with facility staff, providers, and outside agencies.
- Utilize facility and corporate policies while exercising sound independent judgment.
- Audit and evaluate medical services to prevent inappropriate or duplicate use.
- Ensure proper pharmacy usage and compliance with all pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances.
- Assist with medical file reviews and ensure complete, accurate documentation of services.
- Observe and record inmate/resident behavior; monitor for potential catastrophic illnesses.
- Inspect medical units for contraband risks; secure or properly dispose of supplies/equipment.
- Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and logs; process documentation in a timely manner.
- Review and respond (with corporate counsel) to lawsuits and attend hearings when needed.
- Support facility accreditation efforts (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by ensuring medical program compliance.
- Prepare safety/accident reports; respond appropriately to emergencies or unusual incidents.
- Maintain strict security and confidentiality of all medical records and information.
