The Emergency Department RN at a Critical Access Hospital is responsible for delivering high-quality, independent patient care in a resource-limited, rural setting. This role requires a nurse who is clinically strong, autonomous, and confident in emergency care, respiratory management, and medication preparation. The RN must be able to manage a full spectrum of patient conditions with limited on-site support services after hours.

πŸ›  Essential Responsibilities

Provide full cycle emergency care: triage, assessment, treatment, and stabilization

Perform bedside medication mixing and administration due to no pharmacy coverage after 4 PM weekdays and no weekend pharmacy

Manage respiratory support independently, including BiPAP and O2 therapies, due to absence of respiratory therapy department

Respond to acute and emergent situations with minimal support; initiate emergency protocols

Collaborate with on-call providers and external transport teams for escalated care

Document thoroughly and accurately in EMR system; provide bedside shift reports using BSSR and AIDET

Participate in patient/family education and discharge planning

Maintain readiness for surge situations or mass casualty events

Strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills

Medication reconstitution/mixing and IV compatibility knowledge

Proficient in BiPAP, CPAP, oxygen delivery systems, and respiratory assessments

ACLS-level code response capabilities

Ability to work autonomously in a low-resource setting

Active RN license (state-specific or compact)

BLS – AHA

ACLS – AHA
