Registered Nurse – Emergency Department (Travel/Contract)

Location: Lincoln, Maine
Facility: Penobscot Valley Hospital
Type: Travel/Contract Assignment
Reports To: Human Resources on Day 1 for Onboarding

License and Certification Requirements

  • RN License: Active Maine RN license or Compact RN license
  • Certifications:
    • Required: BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • Preferred/Required: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Education: BSN preferred
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of recent Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience required

Health & Immunization Requirements

All immunizations and health screenings must be current and documented prior to start date:

  • Varicella (Chickenpox): 2 doses or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B: 3 doses, positive titer, or signed declination (only declination accepted for HepB)
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 doses or positive titer
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis): Current
  • PPD (Tuberculosis): 2-step or negative titer within past 12 months
  • Influenza Vaccine: Required during flu season

Agency Requirements

  • Agency W-9 (for tax documentation)
  • Certificate of Insurance (COI) showing coverage for:
    • Workers’ Compensation
    • Professional & General Liability: Minimum $1M / $3M coverage

Position Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, age-appropriate nursing care to patients presenting to the ED. This includes assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and coordination of care in collaboration with physicians and the healthcare team. The RN ensures delivery of high-quality, compassionate, and safe care in accordance with hospital policies, state regulations, and nursing standards.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform and document initial and ongoing age-appropriate nursing assessments.
  2. Develop and implement individualized plans of care based on patient needs and physician orders.
  3. Identify and prioritize patient care needs to ensure optimal outcomes.
  4. Execute nursing interventions to achieve patient goals.
  5. Communicate effectively with healthcare team members and update them on patient status and care plans.
  6. Document all patient care activities per hospital standards and regulatory requirements.
  7. Administer medications safely, utilizing the “five rights” and med verification processes.
  8. Evaluate and document patient responses to medications and treatments.
  9. Assess and provide patient/family education regarding care plans, discharge instructions, and follow-up needs.
  10. Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  11. Ensure proper functioning and availability of supplies and equipment.
  12. Report any safety, legal, or quality concerns promptly to the nurse manager.
  13. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, bedside rounds, and quality improvement initiatives.
  14. Assist with patient billing/charges and ensure accurate documentation.
  15. Participate in hospital emergency/disaster preparedness drills and response efforts as required.
  16. Demonstrate professionalism and promote the hospital’s mission, vision, and values at all times.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, and lifting up to 30 lbs .
  • Must be able to push patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Requires adequate visual and auditory acuity for patient assessment and monitoring.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and cleaning chemicals/fumes.

  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing assessment, clinical procedures, and care for all age groups.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure in fast-paced, high-acuity environments.

  • Actively supports and participates in hospital-wide Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives.
  • Recommends and implements process improvements as appropriate.
  • Reports any quality or safety issues promptly.
  • Commits to continuous improvement and organizational excellence.

Emergency Management

All hospital staff, including contracted personnel, play an essential role in emergency and disaster response. RNs are expected to participate in:

  • Preparedness planning and drills
  • Real-life emergency response efforts within the scope of their professional and personal capabilities
