MRI Techs work closely with patients, ensuring their comfort and safety while performing scans. They must follow established protocols, maintain equipment, and ensure high-quality imaging results.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform MRI Scans: Conduct MRI procedures on patients, ensuring high-quality images are produced for diagnostic purposes. This includes positioning patients correctly, following safety protocols, and adjusting the MRI equipment as needed.
Patient Interaction: Prepare patients for the MRI procedure, explain the process, and provide reassurance. Monitor patient condition during the exam.
Image Quality Assurance: Review images for quality, ensuring that they meet diagnostic standards. If necessary, repeat scans to obtain the best results.
Safety and Protocols: Adhere to strict safety guidelines to protect patients from potential risks associated with MRI procedures. This includes screening patients for contraindications such as implanted medical devices (e.g., pacemakers, metal implants).
Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of MRI machines and equipment. Report any malfunctioning or required repairs to the supervisor.
Record Keeping: Document all procedures, patient data, and images. Ensure accurate and up-to-date patient records.

Proficiency in operating MRI machines and related equipment.
Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols.
Strong knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
Excellent patient care skills, with the ability to comfort and reassure patients.
Problem-solving skills to adjust procedures based on patient needs and scan quality.
Attention to detail and ability to identify and resolve equipment or image issues.
Good communication skills to explain procedures and interact with the medical team.

Associate’s degree in Radiologic Technology or a related field.
Certification in MRI technology, often obtained through organizations such as the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.
State Licensing and Certification Requirements:
Certification Requirements: Most states require MRI Technologists to be licensed or certified to practice. Certification is typically obtained through the ARRT or American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT).
The following states require MRI Techs to be licensed or certified:
California: Requires licensure for radiologic technologists, including MRI Techs.
New York: Requires state licensure for MRI Technologists.
Texas: Requires certification through the ARRT for MRI Techs to work in healthcare settings.
Florida: Certification and/or licensure are required for MRI Technologists.
Washington: Requires licensure for MRI Technologists through the state Department of Health.
Massachusetts: Requires certification for MRI Techs.
States with Certification Requirements: Some states may not require state-level licensure but will still require national certification through ARRT or another recognized certifying body. These states often have a less stringent licensing system, but certification is typically needed for employment.
Note: Always check with state-specific regulatory agencies for the most accurate and up-to-date licensing and certification requirements, as they may change over time.
