Position Summary:

The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) provides safe, compassionate, and therapeutic care to patients with behavioral health and psychiatric needs. The RN utilizes the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to promote patient stabilization, recovery, and overall well-being in accordance with professional nursing standards and hospital policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Utilize the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide direct care to psychiatric patients.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members —including psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare staff—to develop and implement individualized patient care plans.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments safely and accurately, in accordance with established policies, procedures, standards of care, and applicable state laws/practice acts.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, medication administration, and patient progress according to facility standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, initiate, and execute individualized plans of care based on patient needs and treatment goals, including education and support for patients and families.
  • Participate in departmental and unit-based performance improvement initiatives, including shared governance, to enhance the quality and safety of care.
  • Provide clinical expertise and guidance to other departments/units in support of the patient’s ongoing plan of care and continuity across the continuum.
  • Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to identify safety concerns and escalate issues through the appropriate chain of command.
  • Maintain a therapeutic and safe environment for patients and staff, implementing de-escalation techniques and crisis interventions when necessary.
  • Adhere to hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and infection control standards.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of psychiatric/behavioral health nursing experience preferred (acute inpatient experience strongly desired).
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Active RN license in the state of practice (or compact state license).
    • BLS (AHA) required.
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) or equivalent certification preferred or required within 90 days of hire.
