Med/Surg RN - Full Time Position

Position Summary

• Full Time position requiring 36 hours plus 2 on-call shifts within a 4-week period • Rotational schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays • Opportunity to work in the specialized 3 North unit caring for patients with medical conditions

Required Qualifications

• NYS RN Licensure Required • BLS certification required • ACLS certification required (AHA or RQI only) • NIHSS certification required • One (1) year experience serving in Med/Surg environment as a Registered Nurse

Role Overview

• Apply knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families • Assess patient needs, develop care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provide direct care, evaluate patient progress, and coordinate care delivery throughout the patient's episode • Develop specialized skills in caring for patients admitted with medical conditions • Provide care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with medical conditions • Provide patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing • Promote comfort and provide emotional support in a Healing Environment

Key Job Functions

Clinical Care Delivery: • Apply nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care • Assess patient/family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data obtained through direct observation/assessment, technology, or health team communication • Create developmentally and age appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plans of care to address identified health problems • Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team members to set goals and monitor patient progress • Adjust care plans based on patient response or changes in condition/reprioritization of needs • Demonstrate skill in application of interventions including medication administration Patient Advocacy and Safety: • Promote, advocate for and protect the health, safety and rights of patients • Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcomes • Understand personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies • Teach others as appropriate and delegate tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice Patient and Family Education: • Motivate patients and families by teaching them what is needed to continue care/healing at home • Assess patient/family learning styles and structure sessions to maximize understanding • Seek "teachable" moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information • Ask questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process • Provide tools and information to assist patients and families after discharge • Document education provided and patient/family response to education Quality Improvement and Professional Development: • Systematically evaluate quality and effectiveness of nursing practice • Use results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and care delivery • Engage in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas where professional development would be beneficial • Take accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skills • Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems Patient-Centered Care: • Reflect the importance of making meaningful connections with patients and families • Develop helping, trusting, and caring relationships by being present in moments of interaction, listening, communicating, engaging, and anticipating patient/family needs • Strive to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging that patients and families are the central focus of all care and services • Embrace the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice

Occupational Considerations

• Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated • Required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues
