SEIU Local 503 is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to join our Legal team and support building power for the over 70,000 workers we represent. SEIU Local 503 is a dynamic, growing union representing public employees, including state, local, and higher education workers, as well as long-term care workers such as homecare, nursing home, and facility-based workers. Our work to lift standards and secure strong contracts has positively impacted our members and Oregonians as a whole. Achieving success requires a strategic approach with collaboration across all union departments.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with diverse populations and an ability to meet people where they are. Given the evolving nature of our legal work, adaptability, resilience, and strategic thinking are essential qualities for our Staff Attorney.

Core Responsibilities :

Develop and implement Local 503's legal vision, strategy, and programs.

Prepare and present arbitration cases.

Handle representation and unfair labor practice cases before the National Labor Relations Board and the Employment Relations Board.

Engage in litigation in State and Federal trial courts.

Draft appellate briefs and advise staff and leaders on contract administration and labor and employment issues.

Identify and alert staff to emerging legal challenges.

Conduct staff and membership training.

Collaborate with member committees and provide guidance on governance documents, bylaws, and administrative policies and procedures.

Participate in union-wide activities such as membership drives, political campaigns, and fieldwork, including worksite visits, phone banking, house visits, door-to-door canvassing, and literature distribution.

Job Qualifications & Requirements :

Membership in the Oregon State Bar or ability to achieve membership within one year of hire.

Experience in collective bargaining, contract administration, labor organizing, or labor law preferred.

Commitment to using legal tools to build worker power.

Ability to conduct legal research and produce clear written materials for varied audiences.

Strong judgment, analytical skills, and decision-making abilities.

Understanding of legal principles, systems, and terminology.

Good public relations skills, maintaining professionalism and composure.

Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and equipment.

Capacity to manage multiple tasks and follow detailed instructions promptly.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments and with members.

Proactive, able to work under pressure, and willing to work evenings, weekends, and occasional travel.

Other Experience Considered :

Experience in immigration, employment, administrative, or corporate liability fields.

Experience as a union steward, organizer, or representative.

Compensation & Benefits :

This position is part of the staff union.

Salary range: $92,256 - $135,000, based on experience.

Employer contributes 15% of salary to your 401(k).

Fully paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees, with coverage for dependents and domestic partners.

Cell phone allowance of $90/month and State Bar Dues.

Additional $210/month in a Flexible Spending Account (with cash option).
