Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

$135,700.00 - $223,900.00

What Is the Opportunity?
Travelers is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. The individual will complete advanced software end-to-end engineering tasks that span many parts of a system including designing, developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system specifications. They will also consult with users to determine hardware, software or system functional specifications, manage resources effectively, act as a subject matter expert across multiple applications, systems, and technologies, leverage technical and business knowledge to drive planning and execution of complex initiatives, participate in the design/development process, and provide technical leadership while leading a team of SWEs.
What Will You Do?
- Lead a team of Software Engineers by providing technical guidance and mentorship while modeling Travelers' leadership behaviors.
- Lead technical design sessions and discussions to translate business requirements into strategic technical solutions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Maintain code quality and standards by evaluating code, providing constructive feedback, conducting reviews, and staying informed about industry practices to guide development.
- Accelerate AI initiatives and integrate AI technologies into processes by shifting talent towards AI-driven execution and advocating for AI tools in the SDLC.
- Develop talent and align strategies by prioritizing hiring and evolving skills in key areas, while facilitating communication across departments to support strategic objectives.
- Enhance team performance and engineering practices by developing, measuring, and standardizing teams on practices such as Quality Engineering, Code Review, and SRE.
- Lead investigation and resolution efforts for critical, high impact problems, defects, and incidents.
- Seek opportunities where technology can be utilized to improve the business and provide more efficient processes.
- Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions for software engineering problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- 5 years of related experience; including insurance / financial services industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience implementing current technology trends and techniques (e.g., cloud-based solutions leveraging microservices).
- Interprets internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve SDLC processes.
- Delivery - Advanced skills including determining software design strategy, using automated tests, analysis, and feedback loops to ensure quality, monitoring health of efforts and systems.
- Domain Expertise - Proven ability to develop business partnerships, influence priorities, and share knowledge relevant to the domain.
- Problem Solving - Strong ability to utilize data and proofs of concepts to find creative solutions, reflect on solutions, and make impactful decisions.
- Communication - Ability to describe technical concepts clearly, collaborate effectively, and provide constructive feedback.
- Leadership - Advanced skills to inspire, motivate, and influence team members, taking action even without clear ownership.
What is a Must Have?
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Three years of programming/development experience.
