Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to provide high-quality patient care in a fast-paced Med Surg/Telemetry observation/overflow unit. The RN will deliver direct patient care, supervise support staff, manage clinical situations, and ensure compliance with hospital standards and regulatory guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Provide direct nursing care, assess patient needs, and evaluate outcomes
- Modify care plans based on patient response and interdisciplinary input
- Educate patients and families on treatment, discharge instructions, and self-care
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment and ensure patient comfort
- Respond promptly to patient inquiries and clinical changes
Clinical Duties
- Assist physicians with exams, procedures, and emergency interventions
- Perform triage in accordance with screening regulations and protocols
- Manage IV therapy, central/PICC line care, telemetry monitoring, drips (non-titrating), wound care, and other required procedures
- Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record (Epic preferred)
- Report changes in patient condition to the provider clearly and promptly
Leadership & Teamwork
- Delegate tasks to support staff based on skill level and patient needs
- Supervise and support nursing personnel throughout the shift
- Serve as a relief Charge Nurse as assigned
- Participate in orientation and training of new staff
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including PT, Respiratory Therapy, Radiology, Pharmacy, and Social Services
Compliance & Professionalism
- Adhere to hospital policies, safety standards, infection control, and documentation regulations
- Participate in continuous quality improvement efforts
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold patient rights
- Engage in ongoing professional development and required departmental meetings
Unit Information
- Unit Type: Med Surg/Telemetry – Observation & Admission Holds
- Typical Diagnoses: Cardiac, GI, respiratory conditions; fall patients; repeat CT monitoring for anticoagulated patients
- Patient Ratio: 4:1
- Patient Population: Adults & Geriatrics
- Interdisciplinary Support Available: PT, RT, Radiology, Phlebotomy, Social Services, RRT, Pharmacy, Unit Secretary
- Daily Census: 8–20
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years RN experience (2 years required to submit)
- Travel nursing experience required
- Active RN License (Must be valid at time of submission)
- Certifications (AHA only): BLS, ACLS, CPI or MAB, NIHSS
- Required Skills: Telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation, central line & PICC care, EKG interpretation, heparin/insulin protocols, wound care, IV initiation, blood administration, rapid response/code support
- Epic charting experience preferred
