Obstetrics & Gynecology Physician at Veterans Health Administration summary:

An Obstetrics & Gynecology Physician evaluates, diagnoses, and treats women with acute and chronic gynecologic and related conditions. They provide patient education on health, wellness, family planning, and disease prevention while managing common gynecologic issues such as pregnancy, infertility, and menopause. Procedures include biopsies, contraceptive device management, colposcopy, cryotherapy, and minor surgical interventions.

The scope of privileges includes the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment, disposition, and referral women of all ages with acute and chronic gynecologic and common non-gynecologic symptoms, illnesses, injuries, or conditions. Provide education on health, wellness, family planning, and the prevention and management of disease. Assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions in accordance with medical staff policy.

  • Manage common GYN issues to include pregnancy, infertility, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and menopause Therapy of condyloma and intraepithelial neoplasia.

  • Colposcopy with or without biopsy (ASCCP certification preferred)

  • Intrauterine device insertion/removal

  • Subcutaneous contraceptive rod insertion/removal

  • Incision and drainage of cysts and minor abscesses

  • Fitting of diaphragm or cervical cap

  • Endocervical curettage

  • Endometrial biopsy

  • Cryotherapy

  • Excision/biopsy of vulvar lesions

  • Needle aspiration for culture

  • Biopsy of vaginal mucosa

  • Punch biopsy

  • Shave biopsy

  • Excisional biopsy

  • Topical and local infiltration anesthesia

  • Paracervical block (optional)

  • Large loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) (optional)
