? Unit Overview Required Experience & Skills

• 2 years med surg tele exp required RN IL license
• Minimum 1 year surgical experience
• Total joint experience required
• Competence with:
  • PCA pumps & narcotic management
  • Reversal drugs (Narcan)
  • Sepsis management
  • TPN/Lipids
  • Heparin drip titration (per protocol)

Unit: Med Surg/Tele – Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)
Beds: 48 (two buildings)
Trauma Level: II
Charting: Allscripts – Sunrise
Accepts Local Clinicians: ✅ Yes

?‍⚕️ Staffing & Ratios

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio (Nights): 1:4–6
• LPNs Available: Yes
• Support Staff: CNAs (may be pulled as sitters), virtual admission/discharge nurses
• Primary Care Nursing Model: Frequently used
• Charge Nurse: Present on all shifts; may take smaller assignment at night
• Tele Techs: Yes, monitor tele; RNs interpret strips (Draeger monitors)

? Common Diagnoses / Patient Types

• Neuro: Laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI
• Surgical: Belly surgery (ostomies, hernia repair), total joint replacements (hips/knees)
• Vascular: Fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA/AKA
• Medical: DM, chronic pain, sepsis, urgent OR cases
• Lines/Infusions: PICC, TPN, Lipids, PCA, epidurals, IV antibiotics

• CPAP: Home units (managed by RT)
• Bipap: Occasionally, may stay on unit
• Airvo: Possible

? Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift: 12-hour nights (7p–7a)
• Schedule: 3 shifts/week; not guaranteed block scheduling
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun)
• Holiday Rotation: With core staff
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: To like units only; if to higher acuity, will serve as “help-all,” not take a full load
• Schedule Release: 6 weeks in advance

? Orientation

• 1 full 12-hour shift on unit/shift of hire
• First day: 12–14 hours for comps, computer modules, general orientation
