Description

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), is recruiting a Lead Archaeologist to join the Cultural Resource Services (CRS) Program. The associate will work under the direction of the Cultural Resource Program Manager to provide leadership for the park’s Archaeology Program by participating in and overseeing archaeological field work, archaeological reporting, in-field artifact analysis, data processing and management.

Description

The associate will conduct surveying for cultural resources, construction monitoring, recording and documenting cultural resources, condition assessments of known sites, and NRHP eligibility assessments in support of Section 106 and 110 of the NHPA. They may act as Field Crew Lead on some projects and as a crew member on others, developing skills and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Knowledge of cultural resource management laws and regulations
  • Timely completion of forms and reports for SHPO and NHPA
  • Implementing field projects efficiently
  • Leading and reviewing work of others
  • Utilizing GIS and GPS for data collection and mapping
  • Data entry and report writing
  • Backcountry navigation and camping

Physical demands include prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting heavy items, and working in extreme weather conditions. Overnight camping in remote areas may be required, and some work areas are only accessible by boat.

Location

Based out of Boulder City, Nevada, near Las Vegas, the position offers opportunities in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, with access to extensive recreational activities.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Wage: $35/hour
  • No park housing available

Timeline

  • 12-month appointment starting September 2025
  • Full-time, some overtime/weekend work

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in anthropology, archaeology, or related field, including archaeological field school
  • Experience with Section 106 reports, surveys, GIS, and artifact analysis
  • Physical fitness for backcountry work
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate 4WD vehicles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with environmental compliance, historic context writing, desert work, and regional cultural history
