Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician 2 years exp required

Shift Information:

Primarily Day shift with weekend rotation; 5 - 8 hr shifts per week

 

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of supervisors, the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist is directly responsible for the prompt and accurate performance of assigned work. This role performs analyses on blood and other body fluids to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The individual must maintain proficiency across all clinical departments within the laboratory.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • No previous experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with hospital departments, medical staff, patients, and co-workers.

License/Certification/Registration:

  • Certified MT or MLS with ASCP, AMT, NCCLS, or equivalent certification.

SUPERVISION

Received:

  • General supervision from the Medical Director, Manager, Supervisors, and Section Heads.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

  • Perform assigned duties accurately, efficiently, and according to established procedures using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Accurately prepare specimens for processing: identify, log, and enter patient data; ensure proper testing is ordered.
  • Promptly begin analysis using manual or automated methods to determine qualitative or quantitative results.
  • Ensure quality control criteria are met before releasing reports. Immediately repeat out-of-control procedures following protocol.
  • Maintain organized work practices to prevent confusion and reduce errors.
  • Review results for accuracy and completeness before release. Repeat inconsistent results or request new specimens when necessary.
  • Seek supervisor assistance for difficulties in identification, interpretation, or rare abnormal findings.
  • Assist with training of technical personnel by demonstrating techniques and reviewing performance when requested.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and quality assurance activities as instructed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Comply with all safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures; report hazards to the supervisor.
  • Suggest service improvements when appropriate.
  • Comply with policies regarding patient information confidentiality and report documentation.
  • Maintain equipment: daily performance checks, timely problem reporting, and coordination with patient care areas regarding delays.
  • Troubleshoot instrument and procedural issues efficiently and accurately.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of reagents and supplies; request additional materials as needed.
  • Promote cost control through efficient use of materials and by suggesting conservation strategies.
  • Rotate, date, and test reagents to ensure accuracy and availability.
  • Participate in the implementation and evaluation of new procedures, products, or equipment.
  • Provide feedback and written evaluations on new products or methods when requested.
  • Suggest improvements to methodologies, workflow, or accuracy of service.
  • Perform specimen collection duties:
    • Verify patient identification before collection.
    • Maintain high accuracy (no more than one identification error in a 12-month period).
    • Respond promptly to specimen collection requests and communicate any delays.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Perform related and miscellaneous duties as assigned by lab supervisors.
  • Accept additional assignments as needed.
  • Voluntarily assist co-workers during high workload or patient care priority periods.
