Job Summary:
The Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse provides expert, compassionate care to patients during labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period. This role requires strong clinical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work effectively in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments of laboring patients and implement individualized care plans.
- Monitor maternal and fetal well-being using electronic fetal monitoring and interpret results to guide clinical decisions.
- Assist with all types of deliveries, including vaginal, cesarean sections, and high-risk births.
- Administer medications, including Pitocin, magnesium sulfate, and epidurals, following hospital protocols.
- Provide emotional support and education to patients and families before, during, and after delivery.
- Collaborate with physicians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and efficient patient care.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records.
- Prepare delivery rooms, maintain sterile environments, and ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are properly handled.
- Participate in newborn stabilization and resuscitation as needed.
- Support postpartum care, including breastfeeding support and discharge education.
Qualifications:
- Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Michigan.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required or must be obtained shortly after hire.
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in Labor & Delivery or women’s health preferred. New grads may be considered with strong clinical rotations in obstetrics.
Skills & Abilities:
- Proficiency in electronic fetal monitoring and obstetric emergency protocols.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods and assist with patient mobility.
Work Conditions:
- Hospital setting; 12-hour shifts (days, nights, weekends, and holidays may be required).
- Frequent exposure to bodily fluids and high-stress clinical situations.
- Must be able to lift or assist patients and maneuver medical equipment.
