Job Summary
The Operating Room Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering safe and effective patient care during surgical procedures. This role involves preparing the OR, collaborating with the surgical team, maintaining sterile technique, ensuring accurate documentation, and promoting a safe, organized environment throughout the perioperative process.
Responsibilities
• Assess and respond to patients’ physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs; serve as a patient advocate
• Prepare the operating room with appropriate sterile supplies and equipment according to case assignments
• Collaborate with scrub nurses, anesthesia staff, and surgeons to maintain an organized and efficient OR environment
• Verify patient identity and operative site per policy; transport patients safely and communicate effectively with the surgical team
• Maintain constant observation of the sterile field throughout procedures
• Document all required patient and procedural information accurately and promptly
• Verify consents, H&P, and conduct surgical “time-out” per protocol
• Oversee and verify sponge, needle, and instrument counts, reporting results to the surgeon
• Ensure all medications are properly labeled and handled according to safety standards
• Handle and label specimens accurately, maintaining proper documentation and chain of custody
• Use appropriate PPE and ensure all team members follow safety and infection control protocols
• Function as a float/resource nurse when needed, maintaining communication across departments and assisting with workflow
• Review surgeon preference cards regularly to ensure necessary supplies and equipment are available
• Maintain knowledge of all surgical equipment, supplies, drugs, and their storage locations
• Be familiar with anesthesia equipment, crash carts, and emergency supplies
• Promote cost-effective resource utilization while maintaining quality patient care
• Participate in inventory management and assist with housekeeping duties between cases
• Perform additional duties as required, including Phase 2 recovery or late shift nursing, and assist in other patient care areas as needed
Requirements
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license – state-specific or compact
• Minimum 2 years of recent operating room or perioperative nursing experience
• BLS and ACLS certifications – required (PALS preferred)
• Strong knowledge of sterile technique, OR safety standards, and surgical procedures
• Proficiency in teamwork, communication, and documentation skills
