Perform all patient service and required blood and sample collection/tracking/transport/processing for all patient groups.
Responsibilities:
- Performs blood collection procedures and related tasks according to established laboratory protocol
- Verifies order requests and identifying information prior to drawing blood or collecting the specimen/kit to be tested by analytical staff
- Labels all specimens collected and delivers them to the appropriate processing area.
- Greets patients warmly and professionally in any setting (inpatient, outpatient or Extended Care) and completes test request entry and specimen receipt using lab computer.
- Performs specimen processing and sends out tasks including accessioning, centrifugation and packaging for transport when necessary for all specimen types.
- Communicates essential information to appropriate personnel.
- Completes and submits appropriate administrative paperwork/log sheets neatly and timely, such as time and mileage reports
- Required to travel to various locations within the enterprise
- Must be flexible to work at assigned locations and hours that are in need of coverage. Location could vary daily and may be determined with minimal notice.
- Actively promotes effective communication flow both within and outside of the department.
- Picks up and delivers blood, other sample types, and lab supplies to appropriate areas.
- Provides a positive customer service rapport and interacts in a pleasant, courteous and cordial manner with co-workers and patients at all times.
- Follows proper laboratory safety procedures.
- Participates in team discussions, provide problem solving ideas and contribute to quality improvement and patient experience goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Graduation certificate from a formal accredited Phlebotomy program preferred.
Certifications:
- Formal phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association must be presented upon hire or within the first 6 months of employment.
- A current, valid Driver License is required.
Complexity of Work:

- Must be able to excel in a high-volume, fast-paced work environment.
Work Experience:
- One current year of phlebotomy experience required.
- Two current years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Experienced and proficient in blood collection from all patient populations
Physical Requirements:
- Requires frequent and long durations of standing and walking.
- Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
