Position Summary

The Unit Manager is responsible for managing Assistant Unit Managers, Registered Nurses, and support staff within specialty critical care, specialty care, or non-specialty patient care units. This role oversees day-to-day unit operations with 24-hour responsibility, including staff supervision, scheduling, budgeting, and compliance with regulatory standards. The Unit Manager reports to a Clinical Director II and the Associate Chief Nursing Officer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and direct nursing and support staff; conduct performance evaluations; manage disciplinary, hiring, and firing actions.
  • Prepare and approve staff schedules; oversee payroll time and attendance.
  • Ensure patient care assignments are based on staff competency and patient needs.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, safety initiatives, and infection control standards.
  • Monitor patient care quality through clinical rounds and collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Manage unit budget, resource utilization, and control overtime.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements; prepare survey responses and action plans.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction and implement improvement strategies.
  • Oversee nurse education and staff training programs, including orientation and ongoing education.
  • Handle patient complaints and grievances in accordance with privacy laws and facility policies.
  • Participate in employee engagement and hospital initiatives.
  • Perform professional nursing duties as needed and provide temporary relief coverage.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 4+ years of nursing experience (5+ years preferred).
  • At least 1+ year recent/current supervisory or interim experience in Labor & Delivery (2+ years supervisory experience in acute care preferred).
  • Active nursing licenses and certifications.
  • MSN or BSN plus a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration required.
  • NICU experience is a plus.
  • COVID-19 vaccination with booster, if applicable.
