Job Description
This is a multi-skilled position requiring a variety of patient care skills and abilities. Must be certified as a Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional nurse (nurse) or Provider (physician or Advanced Practice Provider) the Emergency Department Medic provides care appropriate to the patient populations served. The ED Medic performs their duties based on the unit care delivery model. This role collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care as outlined by the nurse or provider. ED Medics assist with blood and specimen collection, intravenous access, limited medication administration, splint application, obtaining electrocardiograms and assisting with the use of physiologic monitoring devices. The ED Medic adheres to a culture reflective of Centra's best practices for quality and service, creates and maintains a safe patient environment, and contributes to a healthy work environment. Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job • Assists in assuring effective and efficient operations while maintaining consistent and accurate communication with team members, providers, patients and guests • Within Centra scope of practice for ED Medic, provides evaluation and interventions based on the needs of the patient, provider order, nurse direction or appropriate protocol • Documents care, interventions and response for own actions • Assists in triage and reassessment of patients and supports patient flow • Administers medications and fluids as ordered and within scope of services to patients and documents these actions and response • Assists nursing staff in gathering patient data • Communicates patients’ response to plan of care and changes in patients’ condition to appropriate staff • Responds to patient/family/co-worker requests for assistance promptly • Assists with data collection for relevant physical, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of patient care and/or support functions according to established practice standards and appropriate policy/procedure • Organizes and prioritizes daily work assignments to support patient/organizational needs, the interdisciplinary team, and operational safety and efficiency • Provides a safe environment and promotes delivery of quality care • Performs administrative/documentation support functions (electronic and/or paper). • Maintains supplies, equipment and environment as appropriate • Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care/services • Reinforces patient/family and or caregiver teaching plan through approved educational materials or written instructions as appropriate • Assists patients with care as needed and within the assigned scope and competencies. • Provides clinical support to licensed healthcare professionals during examinations and procedures within their scope of practice, education, skills, certification and/or competencies • Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues including critical needs/alarms. • Collects and/or assists in collections of patient samples • Following education and training, applies splints as directed (these must be checked by provider prior to discharge) • Assist in care and monitoring of patients with mental and behavioral health needs, including safety of patient, self and others • Assists with patient monitoring devices including patient height and weight, vital signs, blood glucose monitoring and electrocardiograms • Maintains clean, organized and safe space for patients, guests and caregivers • Assists patients and staff with procedures within the scope of practice following education, training and competency validation • Responds to organizational emergency/disaster situations as needed • Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives resulting from evidence-based literature and/or unit-based metrics, provides care consistent with Centra Health, regulatory and legal expectations and standards. • Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and others according to departmental policy and procedures including orientation, on-boarding and precepting. • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED Completion and certification as a Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Virginia AHA BLS CPR Completion PREFERRED: Relevant patient care experience One year as paramedic National Registry – Paramedic
