Registered Nurse – Emergency Department

Location: Mount Nittany Medical Center
Department: Emergency Services
Reports to: Nurse Manager, Emergency Department

Position Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care based on current nursing knowledge and the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) standards of practice. The RN utilizes the nursing process to assess patient needs, develop and implement individualized plans of care, and evaluate outcomes across the lifespan—from neonate to geriatric populations. This role requires flexibility to participate in scheduled on-call assignments, which may be influenced by community events impacting patient volumes.

  • Demonstrates effective teamwork and serves as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare staff.

  • Displays emotional stability, tact, sensitivity, and sound judgment when caring for patients and working with colleagues.
  • Capable of functioning effectively in high-stress, fast-paced environments.

Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

  • Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification – American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider standard, renewed every two years.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification – AHA standard, renewed every two years.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification – AHA standard, renewed every two years.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (current and valid).

Essential Functions

  • Triage and Assessment:
    • Perform initial triage for all incoming emergency patients; prioritize care based on physical and psychosocial needs.
    • Conduct and document comprehensive nursing histories, including chief complaints and relevant health status.
    • Perform hourly rounding within the department and every 30 minutes in the waiting area when patients are present.
  • Plan of Care Development and Implementation:
    • Create and continuously update individualized plans of care based on patient assessments and reevaluations.
    • Ensure appropriate supplies and equipment are available and functional.
    • Incorporate discharge planning and family/patient discussions throughout the care process.
  • Emergency and Critical Care Response:
    • Recognize and respond to changes in patient conditions promptly.
    • Manage all complications and emergencies according to Mount Nittany Medical Center policies and ENA standards.
  • Documentation and Evaluation:
    • Document patient responses to interventions accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Evaluate patient progress and modify care plans accordingly.
  • Patient and Family Education:
    • Provide education regarding treatments and care before initiation.
    • Offer accurate health information and referrals to patients and families.
    • Document patient/family understanding of discharge instructions.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Perform related duties and other responsibilities as assigned to support the department’s operations and patient care objectives.
