Job Description

Autonomously performs complex diagnostic ultrasound imaging procedures for patients of all ages, under the supervision of qualified physicians for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Diagnostic sonographers take the initiative to confirm the imaging orders for completeness and accuracy. Reviews patient history and supporting clinical data for medical necessity. Responsible for contacting the ordering physician if an inadequate reason for test is supplied. Sonographers utilize advanced knowledge to perform diagnostic procedures (inpatient and outpatient settings, including portable and O.R. examinations) by producing, assessing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data. Sonographers are required to exercise independent judgment in the interpretation and analysis of exams and provide a preliminary diagnosis of the technical findings to the physician. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Within a setting renowned for clinical excellence, you will perform diagnostic ultrasounds for the imaging of normal and abnormal structures of the human body and provide quality care to patients of all ages. • Assess patients appropriately for the procedures ordered prior to, during, and after treatment according to Imaging Services/Departmental Guidelines • Take part in the training of students and staff as assigned. • Create a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families. • As an Ultrasound Sonographer, you would prepare patients, collect relevant information for completion of procedures, and perform sonographic exams following defined protocols. • Throughout the procedure, you would be observant of patients’ conditions and notify physician of unusual occurrences. • Compile appropriate records to expedite results. • You will analyze the quality of images and processes as required. • Completes data sheet containing pertinent patient information following exam prior to forwarding to radiologist. • Using the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) process explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during exams. • Follows department specific standard work and departmental policies. • Practices aseptic techniques and good infection control procedures consistent with hospital policy. • Secures and returns supplies and maintains orderliness and cleanliness of the work areas between each patient. • Competent - can recognize recurrent situations, have knowledge that they can act upon, and can work independently because they have enough personalized in-depth experience they can draw upon. • Able to practice with little or no assistance. • Able to teach others. • Staff realize there is a bigger picture that can be embraced. Instead of managing specific events and being reactionary to work they become proactive with certain aspects of work. • Technologist acts as a Preceptor/Mentor to new staff and participates in Performance Improvement initiatives. • Assumes charge responsibility when designated. • Leads process improvement projects. • Inservice’s staff for education and process changes. Research industry development and present to staff. • Ability to carry out job duties without having to think about it. • Recognize resources and demands. Uses this recognition to attain specific goals. • Ability to know what needs to be done and implement a plan of action. • Ability to stay focused on relevant problems, use tools when necessary, and ignore events that don’t need to be addressed. • Assumes charge (Lead) responsibility daily if needed. • Assist with policy and procedure updates. • Ensures policies, procedures, and guidelines are being followed. • Coordinates with management teams on instrumentation and supply needs. • Act as resource for staff. Coach staff on technical aspect of the job. • Coordinate workflow, assists in ACR Renewal if applicable, assists in staffing schedules, timekeeping, time off requests, TACs Forms. • Assists in Imaging quality initiatives and environment rounding. • Other duties as assigned. Additional Duties: • Assigns, directs, and coordinates the activities of employees; schedules, orients, and trains new employees; assures observance of policies, procedures, and work standards. • Checks work for proper completion; takes corrective action as needed. • Kronos Timekeeping, Crucial Conversations, Performance Improvement Plans, Corrective Actions, Annual Evaluations, Annual Competency Sign Off's, Employee Files, Joint Commission readiness, Environment of Care (EOC) Rounding, Lead Modality Specific Staff Meetings/Huddles. • Plans and coordinates downtimes/PMs. • Manage productivity. • Participate in budgeting/finance. • 80% Clinical 20% Administrative. Supervisory Responsibilities: • Responsible for direct reports Required Qualifications: • Associated Degree or completion of a Certification Program in Ultrasonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or Radiology upon hire of an accredited sonography program and/or ARDMS registered (or registry eligible) in the areas of abdomen, obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN) and vascular technology (RVT). • State licensure may be required depending on the practicing site. • Required Certifications and Licensures: Certified as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification from American Heart Association or the American Red Cross Preferred Qualifications: • US Technologist supervisor experience preferred. Travel Required • Travel is possible if there is an emergent need at different Centra imaging site.
