Job Summary:

The PCU Registered Nurse delivers high-quality, patient-centered care to acutely ill patients who require continuous cardiac and respiratory monitoring but do not need intensive care. The RN coordinates with interdisciplinary teams to provide evidence-based care that promotes patient recovery, safety, and satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care for PCU patients, including those with complex cardiac, pulmonary, or neurological conditions.
  • Monitor patients using telemetry and other advanced monitoring systems; recognize and respond to changes in condition.
  • Administer medications, blood products, and treatments in accordance with physician orders and nursing standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, and case management to create and implement comprehensive care plans.
  • Educate patients and their families about diagnoses, procedures, medications, and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Respond rapidly to emergencies such as code blues, rapid response calls, and deterioration in patient condition.
  • Ensure infection control practices and hospital safety protocols are consistently followed.

Qualifications:

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan (or compact license if applicable).
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • 1+ year of acute care, telemetry, or step-down unit experience preferred (new grads may be accepted in some hospitals with appropriate orientation/training).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation skills.
  • Critical thinking and clinical judgment in high-acuity settings.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and medication administration technology.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize multiple patients and tasks.

Work Conditions:

  • Inpatient hospital setting; 12-hour shifts (day or night), weekends and holidays may be required.
  • Fast-paced, high-acuity unit caring for 4–5 patients per nurse depending on staffing and acuity.
  • Frequent use of PPE and exposure to patients with infectious illnesses.
