The Director of Information Technology (IT) for the Brigham Young University School of Medicine is responsible for leading the development and execution of the School’s IT strategies in alignment with institutional goals. This role oversees the planning, implementation, and management of technology that support data analytics systems, medical education, clinical research, faculty and staff operations, and compliance with healthcare and academic standards. The Director plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the security, reliability, and innovation of IT services to advance the mission of excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.

What you will be doing in this position

Strategic Leadership

Develop and implement a comprehensive IT strategy that supports the academic, research, data analytics and clinical missions of the School of Medicine.

Collaborate with institutional IT, administration, faculty, and clinical partners to align initiatives and ensure integration across departments.

Serve as a liaison to university IT leadership to ensure medical school IT needs are met within broader institutional frameworks.

Technology Infrastructure & Operations

Oversee the design, deployment, and maintenance of IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, educational technology, and cloud-based systems.

Ensure reliable and secure access to critical systems, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and research platforms.

Provide ongoing support for standardized patient training technologies, including simulation labs, video recording systems, and specialized software for case-based assessments.

Develop and manage protocols for securing systems used by faculty, staff, and students in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and other regulatory requirements.

Lead the design and implementation of technology systems for high-stakes assessments, including student examinations and practical skill evaluations.

Support and manage access devices (desktop and printing)

Team Management

Lead, mentor, and develop an IT team composed of system administrators, support specialists, developers, and data analysts.

Promote a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence and proactive problem-solving.

Cybersecurity & Compliance

Implement and enforce IT security protocols to protect sensitive medical, research, and academic data.

Ensure compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and other regulatory requirements, including data governance for student, faculty, and patient information.

Support for Education and Research

Provide innovative IT support for curriculum delivery, simulation labs, telemedicine, and remote learning technologies and data analytics.

Facilitate IT support for clinical trials, research data management and analytics, and grant-funded projects.

Develop and manage the initial IT budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.

Evaluate, negotiate, and manage relationships with technology vendors and service providers in conjunction with central IT.

Coordinate with institutional procurement to ensure alignment with broader university purchasing strategies.

What qualifies you for this role:

Minimum education/experience required

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field.

7+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, with at least 3 years in an academic, healthcare, or research environment across wireless networking infrastructure, operating systems, desktop technology and enterprise systems.

Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, data governance, and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, FERPA, etc.).

Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional teams and complex projects.

Preferred

Master’s degree in Information Systems, Business Administration, or related discipline.

Experience in a medical school, teaching hospital, or academic health center in data analytics, IT, and medical instructional technology.

Familiarity with operating systems like Canvas, Epic, REDCap, SAS, SPSS, Python, ArcGIS, IBM Watson Health, and IQVIA and/or research computing environments.
