*Job Summary:*
Certified Ophthalmic Technicians are health professionals who perform ophthalmic patient care, technical and supportive services under general supervision in a medical office or clinical setting. The Certified Ophthalmic Technician supports the philosophy and complies with the protocols, policies and procedures of the Organization and the assigned Medical Office Department.
*Essential Responsibilities:* * Upholds Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. * Perform diagnostic testing and examination as follows: retinoscopy, refractometry, visual fields, goldmann applination, color vision screen, keratometry, contact lens fitting, slitlamp examination, amsler grid and worth four dot test. * Conduct diabetic ophthalmic clinic which includes: visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, diabetic retinopathy detection, education, treatment and follow up, provide tracking of diabetic retinopathy patients, and maintain diabetic inreach program. * Provide planquenil screening clinic which includes: visual acuity, intraocular pressure, visual field, color vision screen, education, treatment and follow up. * Assist with minor surgery in the medical office. * Provide care and education to ophthalmic patients by reviewing patient condition and developing a treatment process. * Establish and maintain courteous, co-operative relations when interacting with other personnel, health plan members and the public. * Accurately document patient information, test results, etc., following established guidelines for documentation and reporting. * Perform other related duties as assigned
*Principle Job Duties and Skills:* * Ordering all office and clinic supplies, including medications and surgical instruments. * Maintenance and some repair of all clinic equipment. Organization of clinic with MOAs and physicians. * Performance of all diagnostic testing including retinoscopy, refractions, visual fields, Goldmann application, color vision test, A-Scan Biometry and Keratometry. * Counsel patients in Ophthalmic education. * Pre-op all cataract patients and measure for intraocular lens for surgery. * Run ophthalmic diabetic clinic which includes vision, intraocular pressures, fundus photos with Mydratic Digital Camera. * Educate patients on Diabetic Retinopahty including early detection and treatments. * Keep database of all patients and continue to do all internal outreach to make sure all newly diagnosed diabetics get eye screening. * Contact patients with results of eye screen. * Run Paquenil screen clinic which includes vision, intraocular pressure, visual field, color vision test, fundus photography, patient education, and contact patient with results of Plaquenil eye screen. * Post-operative patient call backs. * Assist at front desk as needed for booking appointments and discharging patients. * Set up and assist physician in minor surgeries performed in office. * Contact lens fitting. * Scrub Tech in Sutrabismus and Cataract Surgery. * Perform clinic work up of patients for physician including vision, intraocular pressure, slitlamp exam, other testing as needed per patient symptoms i.e. Amsler Grid, Worth 4 dot test, etc. * Co-worker education re: ophthalmology. * Assist MOAs as needed by performing any functions of a Medical Office Assistant. * Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.
*Basic Qualifications:* * Two (2) years recent Certified Ophthalmic Technician experience required. * Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived. * High school diploma or equivalent work experience required. * Ophthalmic Technician Certificate from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology
*Additional Requirements:* * Obtain continuing education units to maintain current certification.
