Certified Central Sterile Technicians are responsible for infection control by sterilizing, cleaning, packaging, and assembling surgical instruments and equipment using various sterilization methods. They ensure sterile technique, inspect and maintain equipment, assist with quality assurance programs, and support surgical preparation in diverse medical specialties. This role requires certification, physical stamina, and adherence to safety and infection control protocols in a healthcare environment.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Primary responsibility is infection control.
Maintain sterile technique.
Perform all duties according to procedure.
Cleans, sterilizes, packages and assembles instrument sets.
Assist in care and handling of equipment. i.e., suction, fracture frames, pumps, venodyne, etc. (as delineated for Equipment Control Coordinator).
Responsible for cleaning reusable items including surgical pieces and processing through steam sterilizers, gas sterilizers, washer sterilizers, and ultrasonic if necessary.
Responsible for waste disposal and decontamination of contaminated items.
Inspects equipment and instruments through all procedural steps for condition and operation.
Collects soiled instruments, kits, equipment, etc. for processing.
Responsible for daily maintenance and housekeeping duties on work stations as required.
Assists in collection of data for Quality Assurance Programs, ongoing.
Demonstrates planning and organization in preparation for procedures in a Central Sterile environment, i.e., trays, instruments sets.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of sterile technique.
Demonstrates a working knowledge in the following areas in a surgical preparation environment: vascular, ophthalmic, laparoscopic, orthopedic, O.B./Gynecology, General, Urology, Dental, E.N.T., neuro and plastic.
Participates in ongoing education programs.
Demonstrates knowledge the function and operation of equipment in a Central Sterile environment.
Attends/completes Job Certification Program and documents all hospital mandatory in-service programs, i.e., fire, safety, infection control, etc.
Growth potential for surgical case carts, sterilization containers, and CSR-computerized application.

Education/Experience Required:
Ability to read and write and verbalize English
HS Diploma or equivalent
Registration/Certification:
Certified Central Service Technician (CRCST) issued by International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM)
Physical/Environmental Requirements
This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
